Summertime for me is a time of reflection. I have more flexibility to finish projects around the house, I can journal, read, and try some new things. It’s a time where I can actually relax and reflect. And finding You Are a Badass was just what I needed for this summer.
If I’m being honest, last school year was hard. There were lots of changes in my school, my grade level, and my classroom, meaning lots of extra stress. To the point where I started being cynical and negative all the time. I started questioning if teaching was the right thing for me. I started looking into different careers and options.
Then, the last day of school happened.
I always have an end of the year celebration where I let students dress all fancy and walk down a red carpet. I take time to individualize awards for each kid and brag on their strengths. It’s one of my favorite things I do.
But it wasn’t the ceremony that got me. It was everything that happened after. I had a parent give me a two page letter explaining how much of an impact I had on her daughter; I had a mom unexpectedly burst out in tears when she explained how great my classroom was for her son; I had an incredibly supportive parent tell me that I should never stop teaching.
I was on cloud nine.
When I called my mom after school, I told her that I truly believe it was a sign from the universe telling me to keep teaching. This day was too perfect.
Then I went off to Bonnaroo and had the time of my life. When I got back home, I had a lot of processing to do. I needed some time to self reflect and figure some things out.
Enter: You Are A Badass
This interesting sounding book was floating around the internet and I couldn’t help but be intrigued by the title. It wasn’t long until I was in Barnes & Noble asking where to find it. Let me tell you about this book. It is life changing.
I’m all about self help books and blogs and I love sharing what works for me to friends and family. But reading this book is like a spiritual experience. It makes you realize just how in control of your life you are. And how you are the only one that can choose where this life takes you and the way you live it.
I’m going into this new school year feeling unstoppable. My goal is to simply enjoy life, whatever that means. I’m going to see my friends more often, I’m going to call my mom every chance I get, I’m going to go house hunting with Elliot and feel so grateful that I can. I’m not going to hold myself back.
So, do yourself a favor and pick up this book. Stay open minded, write down your favorite parts, and let it inspire you.
Because you really are a badass, if you let yourself be.
